Overcoming Fear as a Leader
Jun 13, 2023As a leader, fear can be your biggest enemy. Fear of failure, fear of the unknown, fear of success—these are all potential roadblocks that can prevent you from reaching your goals and achieving success. Fortunately, with the right knowledge and tools, you can recognize when fear is holding you back and take steps to overcome it. Let’s explore how to do just that.
What Fear Really Is
The hard truth about fear is this: It is all in your head. Yes, fear is simply thoughts in your mind. It is not tangible. It is not necessarily realistic. Just simply a thought.
In his book "Supercoach", Michael Neill gives a great visualization of this. He describes how most people think they are the audience watching a movie in the theater. The action is happening on screen and the audience is a passive spectator. Helpless in their control of what plays next. But he goes on to describe how the people who truly break free realize they can get up at any time, walk up to the projector room, and simply change the film being played.
Once you recognize this, you understand that fear is not controlling your life. You are!
Recognizing the Signs of Fear
Recognizing the signs of fear is an important first step in overcoming it. The most common signs include procrastination, difficulty making decisions, feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, and avoiding risks. These are all normal reactions when we feel overwhelmed or uncertain about our ability to meet a challenge.
It’s important to understand that these fears are natural and don’t necessarily mean that you’re not up for the task ahead. They are simply warning signs telling us that we need to take time to assess the situation and strategize a plan of action.
Naming Your Fear's Root Cause
Once you have identified your fears, the next step is to name their root cause in order to begin taking steps toward overcoming them. Fears often stem from a lack of knowledge or experience in a certain area; for example, if you are afraid to launch a new business venture because you don’t know how to create a website or develop a marketing strategy for it, then knowledge is what you need in order to move past this fear. Other times fear may come from outside pressures; for example, if someone has been pressuring you to launch something before you feel ready then it might be beneficial for you to set boundaries around what feels comfortable for you instead of allowing yourself to become overwhelmed by expectations from others. The act of naming your fear helps to reduce its power over you.
Overcoming Fear
Once the root cause of your fear has been identified, it’s time to start taking steps toward overcoming it. One approach could be breaking down your goal into smaller chunks which can help make big tasks seem more manageable; this could involve creating an action plan with deadlines or enlisting help from people who have expertise in areas where you lack experience in order to leverage their support and accelerate progress towards meeting your goals. Additionally having faith in yourself despite feeling scared can also be very helpful; visualizing success can help motivate us even during difficult times as well as affirm that we are capable of doing great things even when faced with daunting challenges! Ultimately, if you want to overcome the fear as fast as possible, take immediate action on the thing you fear. Chances are the fear has been built up in your mind as something bigger than reality. Once you are in it, you will see that your original fear was most likely irrational and bloated.
Fear can be paralyzing but with enough self-awareness and determination, it is possible to move past these obstacles and achieve our goals regardless of how intimidating they may seem at first glance! By recognizing our fears and understanding their root causes we can be better prepared to tackle these situations head-on while simultaneously harnessing additional resources such as setting realistic timelines or seeking out expert advice which will ultimately lead us closer to success! Leaders should always remember that although it takes courage to face our fears head-on, trust that we are in control and we can change the movie at any time we want.
